If you are in need of some new APC batteries, it is very important to know where they are coming from. When purchasing from an Original Equipment Manufacturer (or OEM), there is usually a markup involved. Since this is considered a necessity item, this strategy is usually successful. This has been shown by numerous studies where the profit margin is higher on these types of items rather than the actual product they are needed for. Since most people are so busy with their own lives, ordering a new set of batteries typically involves calling the manufacturer. This is how the price has become fixed at a higher than usual level.
However, smart shoppers have found that there is an alternative to the OEM. These are 3rd party or aftermarket firms who can offer a cheaper (and sometimes better) solution. In many cases, the battery will even have a higher capacity. This doesn’t mean taking the first price however, as many of these devices are made from lower quality parts. As with anything else, it is buyer beware since purchasing an APC battery from a unknown vendor for example may result in a lower price but a less efficient unit.
This does not mean that every battery manufactured in some countries is made from poor quality components. In point of fact, most of the components originate in the Far East. Many times the batteries are either fully or partially assembled before shipment to the United States. The key point is not the place of assembly, but the vendor who is responsible for selling the units.
A good quality device will contain high quality plastic, high efficiency cells and employ quality control methods in the manufacturing process. It usually takes a few months for any problems to start showing up in a battery. This might now help consumers after the fact. A good rule of thumb is to inquire about the warranty on the product being purchased. This is not 100% foolproof, but provides a good indication of whether a maker actually stands behind their product.
Another excellent idea is to ask the seller whether or not the intended battery to be purchased has been heat sealed. This can prevent acid seepage which could cause tremendous damage to expensive equipment. A good vendor will offer a guarantee in writing and has been in business for awhile. This will ensure that that a good quality battery has been purchased.
